christmas 2017

We celebrate our family Christmas on Christmas Eve. Ben plays drums at the Christmas Eve services most years, so that takes the whole day Christmas Eve. Then that night we drive to New Martinsville. We originally started this so we could have a day as a family where we could play with new toys and games and not have to rush out the door for several days. It's a fun tradition we appreciate and love.

So we opened gifts. Played games.

Decorated the cookies Ben and Sophie made the day before. Took naps.

Popped popcorn in my new Whirly Pop and watched Home Alone 2.It was a good day.

We woke up to a white Christmas in New Martinsville. That was really fun.

A girl and her sewing machine.

A boy and his pogo stick.

Ted was SO EXCITED to pass along all his Pokemon cards to Henry for Christmas.

Sophie was loving all the little kid toys.

It took Ben 20 minutes and a few YouTube videos to figure out Henry's new transformer.

And this sink of Roxie's is really, really cool.

This kid cracks me up.

And he didn't think his mom could pogo. I showed him. You would think he would learn after the hover board and trampoline flips. But whatever.

And then I put my phone away, which is also my camera. We had lunch with all of Ben's family and my family. It's another tradition I love.

In the afternoon we headed out to my parents. A couple of years ago, my brother started doing Christmas dinner. He brings his cooking contraptions to my parents and cooks on the back deck. Shrimp and pork tenderloin. This year we added bear to the menu.

All my siblings and their kids come, plus a few cousins and my aunt. We talked and laughed and played games and watched football. Uncle Jim came down from PA and joined the party. It was a good, good day.

The kids had a wrapping paper party!

We stayed in New Martinsville for a few days. We watched WVU get hammered in the bowl game, spent an evening at Aunt Did's, played games with Andy & Courtney and felt the weather turn COLD.

The week between Christmas and New Year's is my favorite of the year. We lay low and no one even cares. We watch lots of sports, complete my semi-annual purge, stay up late and sleep in.

We spent two days cleaning out the basement and then moved on to Sophie's room. She got a new sewing machine and table so we needed to create some space.

Before (we were cleaning out closets, too):

After:

Ben was sick for several days which was a bummer. We did manage to go out for wings with friends, rang in the New Year with the Sizicks and played euchre with the Kozels.

I was a little sad about sickness over the break, so the night before we were supposed to go back to school, we drove to Pittsburgh to watch the new Star Wars at an iMax theater. Whoa - that was awesome! A few years ago, we binge watched Star Wars 4, 5, 6, 1, 2 & 3 over Christmas break and a few added snow days. Then we have watched all the new ones in the theater together. It was a fun night of new movie watching experience, playing heads up (and laughing hard!) in the van and talking about our family goals for 2018 over dinner.

And then we had an Arctic Academy Day the next day and didn't go back to school....

december 2017 recap (minus christmas)

Dcember was warm? Cold?  I can't remember. Either way, I didn't do very well with pictures.

We started the month with a trip to Pittsburgh for the day with the Bozics and the younger Isaacs (Rusty & Kaitlin). The original Isaacs (Greg & Steph) joined us as a total bonus while BA was laboring away at the hospital. We said it was for Ben's birthday, but they we decided it was just an end of the year celebration because we don't really celebrate anyone else's birthday during the year! We also celebrated Kaitlin graduating from nursing school! Yahoo!!

Ben and Heath have the exact same birthday. At leadership that week (on their actual birthday) the leaders took over and had a bit of a competition between Ben & Heath and whatever characters Levi & John are. It included wrestling, shaking ping pong balls out of a tissue box on their booties and drinking soda from a 2-liter bottle being filtered by the others sock. It was followed by gifts (WVU baksetball tickets and a new coffee scale for Ben) and fun

Ben and Heath took Sam, Ted & Cooper to Pittsburgh to see LaCrae. The best part was that Ben and Heath bought tickets long before the boys even know about the concert. Once the boys found out LaCrae was coming, they begged and begged to go as Christmas gifts. Ben and Heath both opened cards on their birthdays with tickets inside for the next night. They all loved it and had a great time. Total highlight of the year for them!

Sophie had several choir performances including singing during the WV Symphony Orchestra performance. It wasn't with the orchestra, but a really cool experience none-the-less.

(Sidenote: Sophie's skirt was a women's size 8 that went well past her ankles. Doh saved the day with her sewing skills.)

We had our Mountain State Region Christmas Party.

JB ran the gift exchange which was classic and hilarious. I've never experienced anything like it. You should hire him for your office Christmas party next year.

Love these people!

A total highlight of the month was going to see Christmas Vacation at the theater. The boys had a basketball game so Joanna and I took Sophie and Lily. It seriously is my all-time fave. We watched it 3 times this year. The theater was the BEST!

The grandparents came over for one of Sophie's choir concerts. I got some poor info about which concert they should attend. They are such good sports.

Sophie and I made our traditional Christmas cookies - chocolate chip. Hahahaha! We made them for Uncle Jim and then ate and gave them all away before we saw him. Oops! (PS - I'm just now starting to use a hand-me-down Kitchen Aide mixer. OMG - it's amazing!)

We hit up the WVU vs. Wheeling Jesuit basketball game. I always bribe Sophie to go to sporting events with Zule's. (Think overpriced shaved ice with your choice of flavor.)

Ted giving some players a high five. That was pretty cool.

Our annual (late) blue and gold pic. (Thank you iPhone 7 portrait mode.)

Sophie went to a Christmas party with Joanna. I got this picture as a text. I'm sorry I missed this one.

We made legit, ginbger bread houses with the Sizicks. By that I mean not from a kit, real icing and all sorts of candy. Cooper & Ted were a team. Ellie & Sam were a team. Sophie was solo (and totally fine with that.)

Sophie's (I'm so proud of this. For her creativity and the time she put into it. She stayed at the table long after the other kids were off playing.

Ted and Coopers. Seriously, I have no idea how their's even was standing at the end.

Ellie & Sam's

Winner! Winner! (In my book at least.)

Viewing #2

Ben's new fancy coffee scale and his new fave mug and coffee. Rusty is roasting and selling coffee and it sure is good, Clark. If you're looking for some good coffee, you should order some from Mountaineer Roasting.

Sophie FINALLY plays Monopoly Deal with us. Four is way better than three and for sure better than two. It's one of our favorites around here.

One of my most favorite thing about Christmas are the Christmas cards. Seriously, I LOVE, love, love coming home to real mail everyday for a month. Two days this year it was nothing but Christmas cards - the best!

We did our annual cookie icing this year with the Kozels. (Joanna is a SAINT and makes all the cookies the day before.) The girls kept their shirts on this year. The boys not so much. Everyone hung around for longer than usual and the engagement was waaaaay better. Lots of emoji's this year.

We've discovered there's no real way to know what the hot color or theme will be for the year until the icing of the cookies is well under way. Keeps us on our toes.

Where do the cookies, the sprinkles and the cookie tray end and start?!?

The favorite cookie of the night!
And no pictures of the kids. Oops!

Ben got an itch to make sugar cookies. Personally, I think they are entirely too much work from start to finish. But no one asked me. And I didn't help.

Other highlights included:
  • breaking our tradition of going through the Christmas maze in Westover on the eve of the eve of Christmas Eve. It rained way too much.
  • I subbed for the 7th grade bible class at Trinity Christian School everyday during the month of December for a teacher on maternity leave. It was good
  • Our car didn't pass inspection because a crack in the bumper had gotten too big (it's been there since we inherited the car. The sticker was already expired so we got a big fat rejection sticker. (Lesson learned on that one!) Instead of paying $650 for a new painted bumper cover from a body shop for a car with 190,000 miles on it, I bought a bumper cover for $68 on Amazon! Boom!
  • We had a game night for Janell's birthday.
  • The annual YL leader and committee Christmas party.
  • Enjoying the leftover meal swipes from freshmen at the Lair.
  • We had school all the way through December 22. I was a little bit whiny about that, which came back to bite me!
