the sophinator

Sophie is turning 3 tomorrow. I don't think I've written her story on here. Ted's will come closer to his birthday. I'll just say they were two of the most polar opposite experiences of my life. This is rather lengthy. This is meant more as a thing for Sophie to read someday down the road.

I found out I was pregnant in September 2007. It was a few short weeks after taking the Family Ministry Director position at River Ridge. I was doing double duty as FM Director and Office Administrator. When I found out I was pregnant, I encouraged Matt and Ted to get on the stick finding someone to replace me as Office Administrator b/c I knew it was only a matter of time before I got sick. I told Jessie I would train her for 2 weeks.

I started throwing up on Ted's 2nd birthday. Right in the middle of Jessie's training. The second week I laid on the office floor a complete mess. I asked my doctor for drugs. He obliged. I started Phenergen which made me loopy. My system quickly adjusted and I didn't spend much time hanging over the toilet. But my stomach was a complete wreck all the time. My days revolved around food and what the plan was for the next meal. Protein and grease were what helped me the most - preferably a combination of the two. It was not uncommon for me to go to Burger King for breakfast for a ham, egg and cheese croisann'wich, Long John Silvers for a 2 piece chicken meal for lunch and Taco Bell for dinner for a soft taco supreme and a nacho supreme with no beans. Sunday mornings I went to Tudor's for biscuits and gravy. Inta Juice was also very helpful.  Thankfully there were multiple locations of each of these around the Charleston metro-area so I rotated as to not seem like a total crazy lady. It's a miracle I didn't weigh 500 pounds.

Poor Ted. I have no idea what the child ate. Everything made me sick. I would lay on the couch and he would climb all over me. He didn't play on his own or watch tv yet. I remember putting him to bed at 6:59 every night when Ben wasn't home. I didn't care that he would get up early in the morning b/c I knew that Ben would get up with him. Thankfully he wasn't real crazy. There were several times I would be changing his poopy diaper and have to run to throw up. I'd come back and he'd be laying there with a diaper wide open having not touched it. God blessed me with that.

That went on from the middle of October through mid-February. I remember thinking I was good and not refilling my prescription sometime in January. I called Rachel Sawhook and asked if I could have some of her meds until my prescription was refilled. That was kind of a scary thought for me. We went to Florida for the 2008 All Staff Conference. The whole first day I spent scoping out my food options for different times of the day. We had to go to Animal Kingdom b/c I couldn't ride rollar coasters. BORING! My usual ASC massage was a complete disappointment too!

I remember feeling ok for roughly 6 weeks. It was in that 6 week time period RRC went from 1 to 2 services. Thank the Lord for good timing.

I was prepared to have a baby anytime after 32 (of 40) weeks (that's when Ted was born). Spring break was 28 weeks for me. Ben finished painting Ted's new room and we spent the weekend cleaning, rearranging, and stuff like that. That Sunday, I realized I hadn't felt Sophie move in awhile. She was a real mover and groover. (Keep in mind we did NOT know if she was a boy or a girl.) I went to the hospital after church. They said the baby was fine but asked me if I knew I was having regular contractions? I did not. It was very reminiscent of Ted. They sent me home on bed rest. My doctor put me on Terbutaline and told me to take it easy.

I had to slow way down. It was not easy. Thankfully, by that time, Ted was able to entertain himself a little more. We had Noggin and it was my saving grace. It would take me until Tuesday to recover from Sundays. I sent Millie to New Martinsville b/c I couldn't keep up with the vacuuming.

My doctor told me to stop taking my terbutaline the Tuesday after Memorial Day (37 weeks). We went to Power Park for our annual staff development day. That night at Arby's I started feeling regular contractions. Wednesday morning I had a regular doctor's appt. I thought my contractions were getting a little more regular but they didn't seem that intense at all. The doctor hooked me up to the machine (which I had been hooked up to once a week) and said, "Do you feel those really big ones?" while pointing to the contraction reader thing. He gave me a pass to go straight to triage in labor and delivery - along with a scolding for eating breakfast that morning.

I called Ben and he didn't believe me that I wasn't coming home. Adrienne faithfully fulfilled her duty as "keeper of Ted" until one of our parents arrived. We waited for a couple of hours in triage for my breakfast to digest starting over on names. They also gave me the most blessed medicine I had ever had for heartburn. Oh my gosh. The heartburn. It was unreal - water and bananas were my two biggest causes of heartburn. I'm not making that up.

The OR was so different from Ted. It was calm and peaceful. The nurses and anethestitists were so excited that we didn't know if the baby was a boy or a girl. They wanted to know my plan of how we would know if it was a boy or girl. Would the doctor hold it up over the curtain? Would the doctor just tell us? What? I had no idea. The devised a plan (which I don't remember) and several of them stayed even though they didn't have to.

Sophie came in at a whopping 7 pounds even. She was so big to us. But so petite at the same time. Skinny little arms and legs. She had a head full of dark hair. She was beautiful. Ben got to help with all the weighing and measuring. It was great! It was calm. It was special. We decided on "Sophie". I had loved the name for a long time and even put it in Ted's ear which really strengthened my cause. Ben always insisted that Sophie was a dog's name. I neglected to tell him that our friends the Shaak's had a dog named Sophie until after the fact. (They have since acquired another dog named Theodore - but they call him Theo). Lauren is her middle name. (Not to be confused with Sophia Loren.) Lauren is half Laura, half Ben. Again, thank you Rachel Sawhook!

So, there you go Miss Sophie. You were worth all of this!

single parenting

I've been a single parent this week. Ben's been at Lost Canyon (YL camp in Arizona) for a class. He is 0 for 2 in getting home easily from his training classes out west. Not to Ben: Pick one in a closer time zone next year. Thankfully it was an absolutely beautiful week. It went from raining and who knows what temperature to sunny and 70's & 80's everyday. We spent a lot of time outdoors, took a walk/bike ride everyday and hit every park in Morgantown this week. Thanks to our friends who played and friends who had us over for dinner.

Technology makes Ben being gone a little easier and a little more fun. I try to text him a video everyday of one of the kids. Between texting and twitter, I at least feel like I'm connected with him a little bit and know what's going on.

A little of our week . . .

I cooked once. The rest of the week involved breakfast for dinner, leftovers,
Chik-Fil-A and dinner at a friends house. When Ben's gone, we are horrible eaters.

We had a dinner theatre (aka eat in front of the tv) one night and the kids watched last summers
Program Opera. We then went on to watch it everyday. Again, I love the things my kids know b/c of Young Life.

It was such a beautiful week. Thank you Lord for lots of sunshine and
even a few pink arms and faces a couple of days.

We played lots of dress up.

And took lots of walks

We played at the park and didn't feed any ducks. Sophie kept calling the geese "greeses".

I gave Sophie a bucket of water and a scrub brush to wash of the colored bubbles.
If you missed that post on facebook, I'll just warn you to never ever,
never ever buy your kids the colored bubbles. They are washable just like the label says.
But the mess - oh the mess. Totally not worth it.

Then the kids washed the truck with the leftover water and some wipes.

We are very excited for Ben to get home tonight. Thursday evening and most of the day today were pretty hairy. Definitely not my best parenting moments. Everyone needs a good wrestle with daddy.

I've always had a special place in my heart for single mom's. I just appreciate them. I may not have always shown that very well. But, I do. I have several very good friends who are single moms. And I respect the heck out of them. If you know a single mom, give them a hug, take her kids for a couple of hours, invite her over for dinner, tell her she's doing a wonderful job, tell her "Happy Mother's Day" when her kids are too little to tell her or actually appreciate the holiday - just love on her a little bit. Or a lot. Because, unlike my single parenting stints, hers isn't just a stint.

house hunters

". . . and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live."- Acts 17:26

I believe this verse when I look backwards. But what I think of when I look forward is "Lord, help me with my unbelief."

For the past 7 months, some dear friends that we have known for over 15 years have lived literally 90 seconds down the street from us. We've talked everyday. Our kids have played together several times a week. Two separate things brought us to Morgantown. I believe with all my heart that God brought us so close in proximity to help both of us get through this year. They moved on Saturday out of Morgantown. I've been so sad. Really sad. But I see the Lord's hand in exactly where we both lived this past school year.

Looking forward, we've started looking for a house to buy. I am disheartened by what is available in our price range. We will spend approximately 40% more on the exact same house we sold in Charleston. We're not looking for anything fancy or big. Just something that fits our family comfortably and maybe has room for more. Just in case. Ben has much more faith in what we will find than I do.

So my prayer is that God will blow our expectations out of the water. That he will provide for us in ways that we can't even ask or imagine right now. And that the Lord would make the timing perfect for us and for the family who has the house that we currently live in. That they would be blessed by their generosity.

So, I'm believing God for this. So that, hopefully in the near future, we can celebrate what God has provided.

Mother's Day Guest

Ben Tuel is my guest blogger today. He's putting Andy and I to shame in the Happy Mother's Day department. To all you mother's who will read this, take this as encouragement that your kids notice (or will someday) all that you do for them. Enjoy, Terri. Get the tissues out . . .

Mom, you have been a MOM for 35 years and counting – Wow!  (I'm the only one getting older, not you.) I wanted to write you a little something entitled – YOU ARE THE ONE. These are 35 things that fall under the category “You are The One” although there are million. I love you!

1. You are the one that went through those few days in labor and brought me into this world – I don’t remember it but I know it happened because I am here now and I can put two and two together.

2. You are the one that I think of when I hear the song “Mrs. Robinson” not because of the content of the song but because of the situation in which we remember it…you remember.

3. You are the one that makes me those amazing cream wafers every Christmas!

4. You are the one that wouldn’t let me cross the street until I had a driver’s license.

5. You are the one that took me to my first STEELERS game.

6. You are the one that was first on the scene to my broken arm and drove me to Wheeling.  Remember listening to my bones grind together on that trip?

7. You are the one that made going to a gas station one Christmas Eve the most memorable Christmas Eve yet!

8. You are the one that showed so much strength when the storms in our life really hit hard.  You were the rock even when you didn’t want to be.

9. You are the one that taught me what it was to LEAD.  Watching you LEAD people at 4H camp and everything else – such a gift!

10. You are the one that laughed right along with us that night in church.  Laughing without being able to help it – what a gift from God.  Grandad didn’t think it was so funny – I think he thinks its funny now for sure!

11. You are the one that read chapter after chapter of history and science to me – or you had your friends do it (EVA, et al.)

12. You are the one that put music into my life….I LOVE IT!

13. You are the one that showed up to Rockbridge as an adult guest to watch me in action.

14. You are the one that was on the other end of the phone when Sophie was down for the count as I said “Don’t panic”, then I panicked and you didn’t for some reason….then I felt okay.

15. You are the one that slept on Andy’s floor night after night when he was sick.

16. You are the one that I loved to bring my Young Life kids home for the weekend to EAT, EAT, EAT! Amazing!

17. You are the one that bought us that cool red 1991 pontiac sunbird.

18. You are the one that was there when I gave my first sermon.

19. You are the one that made me crazy at times because you were being mom.

20. You are the one that made Christmas really amazing.  Decorating the tree to music, presents under the tree, advent calendars, Christmas cookies, all of it.

21. You are the one that typed countless papers and spell checked all kinds of stuff.

22. You are the one who whistled and we could hear you from Bruce Park! And we better COME HOME..like NOW!

23. You are the one that made me feel weird in the normal English speaking world because of my “like” of MILK TOAST – cause no one else did! Haha.

24. You are the one that did all the holidays right and even let Andy and I destroy an entire batch of Easter eggs with our golf clubs – right on Fourth Street. Awesome!

25. You are the one that has done things for me that I will never even know because you love me.

26. You are the one that taught me about integrity.  A right and a wrong and it mattered.

27. You are the one that when you yelled; “BEN” I wouldn’t say “WHAT” I would just come.  Saying “WHAT” just made for a long pause which meant – uhhhhh….COME HERE!

28. You are the one that helped me not do a lot of dumb stuff - b/c frankly I was afraid of the consequences.

29. You are the one (among others) who LOVES my WIFE!

30. You are the one that if everyone else “stopped” in my life you wouldn’t because you can’t!

31. You are the one that housed my friend in high school forever.

32. You are the one that made me go to GHA even though I fought you on it – and I was better for it.

33. You are the one that wrapped my poison ivy with gauze every summer so I could play baseball.

34. You are the one that kept all my rewards and achievements on file. So you could give them to me later?  No, because I matter to you more than I ever really know!

35. You are the one that, when Ted was born, I thought of how much you love me and I DON’T GET IT.  You look at me like I look at my kids and I begin to see not only how much you love me but how much my heavenly Father loves me!  You showed me Christ’s love my whole life – with encouraging words and hard words and being there everytime!

I LOVE YOU MOM!!!

Mountaineer Area YL Leaders

We had our final leadership of the 2010-2011 school year Sunday. It was amazing. I can't believe this school year is coming to a close. I vividly remember the day Ben and I went to the first leadership here. It was such a blessing and so amazing. To be surrounded by college kids who love Jesus and love kids and who have stuck with ministry through the good, the bad and the ugly. It's been such a blessing to live life with world changers this year.
Mountaineer Area Leaders
We celebrated the seniors and commissioned the new leaders.
We had worship, communion and a night that no one will soon forget. It was so very special!

Ben loves to do his leadership lessons on the big easels. So we hung them all around the room.
It was a fun reminder of what we've learned this year.
Cameron and Ben led amazing worship for us. Wow!

It may have been the most powerful worship I've ever been a part of.

New leaders who were commissioned to their new high schools

After they got their placement, we prayed over them.

Easter 2011

Holidays have been a new experience for us this year. Easter included. Ben and I were filling eggs Saturday night and trying to figure out what in the world you do on Easter morning. Up until this point, Ben was already at church when the kids got up, we would fly out the door in the morning, come home, eat lunch and go straight to naps. We usually handed the kids their baskets around 4pm. We figured it out.
Our friends The Johnston's sent Ted a real Englad soccer uniform. So I put it in his basket. It's awesome! The glasses are just a dress up item Ted has chosen to wear for many, many days. I kind of like them.

Sophie got a brand new hair set that included hair dryer, straightener, brush, curling iron, lip stick and (pretend) perfume. Needless to say, we've been spending lots of time getting our hair done.
Ted decided to wear his soccer shirt to Easter church. He also decided to iron it with the hair straightener. That's something he learned from me. If you can't iron it with your straightener (usually while on my person) it's not going to get ironed.

Waiting to go look for Easter eggs
I hosted dinner for Sam, Whitney, Meredith and the Teodoro's. We had quite a spread.

We had a huge Easter egg hunt in the sopping wet grass.
Easter is almost as lucrative as Halloween in the candy department.

And a few pictures totally unrelated to Easter: Sophie relaxing at Ted's soccer practice.
A picnic on the "stage." The stage is actually a wooden covering over a drain by the driveway.

Ted's learning how to wink. It's his current best spiritual gift! =)

the sunshine state

There is so much to catch up on. Life has been a little overwhelming lately. In good and not so good kind of ways. When it rains it pours sometimes. But in the middle of this I took a trip to Florida. Several months ago, Adrienne, Stacy and I bought cheap-o plane tickets to Tampa for 5 days/4 nights at the Godwin's condo in Clearwater. It was the longest I'd been away from my family as a whole in quite awhile. If it's longer than a weekend, it's usually Ben and I together. The kids spend 3 days in New Martinsville and then 2 days in Morgantown with Ben. Everyone survived - which is always a bonus. Ben is always so good about having the house picked up when I got home. Not necessarily clean. It was rather crusty and sticky. But I'm ok with that. Plus there were roses for our anniversary. That definitely makes up for crunchy and dirty.

So, here are some pictures from our trip. There are many that are on Stacy's camera. I'm working on that. These are in no particular order.

A beautiful morning walk on the beach.

The cup store - Derek introduced me to Tervis Tumblers. Love them!

Our view from the deck of Salt Rock Grill - amazing!

My dinner at Salt Rock Grill - YUM!

A bald eagle was being chased by another bird and dropped this about 10 feet from our beach chairs.

We saw these birds mate. WEIRD!

Dinner at Scully's. I sat under the fan - not cool. And I had a huge sunburn - not comfortable. Add to that mating bugs - it was quite the night.

$6 Custard - it was good. Not sure it was $6 good though.

Note to self: No more spray sunblock. I got so burned the first day. Still hurts now. Actually I'm currently very itchy. Only straight up sunblock LOTION for me from now on. Stacy is rubbing noxema all over my legs. I smelled like a 7th grader all week. Memories.

We rented bikes and attempted to ride on the beach. We got about 5 feet. It was road riding for us.

Mimosa's on the beach.

Saying goodbye to the beach. The last day was the only day w/o humidity. My hair has an extremely hateful relationship with humidity. It was not pretty most of the week. Add to that very windy days and having a thin layer of blown sand all over you. Whew! It was not pretty.

I love palm trees! I don't know why. Just do.

Some other highlights of the trip:
- flying "first class" - or at least getting the front row with some extra leg room
- pedicures and massages courtesy of Ann!
- dinner at Salt Rock courtesy of my mom!
- poolside book reading (although i forgot my nook charger)
- sitting by the fan at Scully's
- mating season in florida
- sleeping in - I took tylenol pm everynight.
- waking up at 5am to watch the royal wedding. i'm glad that i did.
- text pictures and videos from the kids (i do love technology)
- boogie boarding in crazy current and wind
- naps
- almost reading a whole book
- healthy eating (till the last day!)
- the margarita deck
- long walks on the beach
- no schedules
- talking and talking and talking and talking

It is good to be home though. It definitely was not good timing in so many ways. But I'm so glad that we went and it was super refreshing. I'm grateful that Ben was so gracious with everything and that Doh and Pap had a great time with the kids.

I think my "tan" will last about 2 more days then I'm back to being ghostly. Sigh!
