tough cookie

Sophie is truly a tough cookie. She woke up Monday with pink eye - oozy, crusty, red and swollen. We got drops started in the afternoon. Neither the pink eye or the drops phased her. The only thing she hates is that I have to hold her down. Her eye is MUCH better today - and no one else has gotten it yet. She is no longer contagious as of this afternoon. Sorry - no pics - Ben has the camera.

Tonight, I really realized how tough she is. She cried when I put her in bed and I couldn't hear here in the kitchen until she was really worked up. So when I went in to get her, she snuggled right up for several minutes - which she never does. I realized that she rarely cries*. She'll fuss or whine when she needs a change of scenery or needs help up off the floor or is annoyed by Ted. But she never cries. Today she hit her head on my knee while we were playing, got whacked in the head by Millie's tail, was pushed from standing by Ted, among other things and never shed a tear. She rarely cries and needs to snuggle and be comforted. Nothing really phases her. She's one tough cookie!

* Unless she is with a babysitter in the evenings - or with Kathy the other day! Then it's all over . . .

a little of this, a little of that

For the 3rd Sunday in a row, I am watching "Planet Earth" on the Discovery Channel. It is truly amazing the way this planet functions. If you've never seen, you truly should watch it.

It's been a BUSY month with no signs of slowing down. . . I'll briefly update you. Ben was gone every night last week: Campaigners Monday, parent meeting and lacrosse game at Hoover on Tuesday, Club Wednesday, worship Thursday, WyldLife Friday. He's going to Lake Champion Monday pm-Thursday late for assignment team training. The kids and I will eat plenty of leftovers, hotdogs, mac and cheese and, the family favorite, chicken crescents.

Sophie is officially a "people food eater." It's all I can do to get some baby food in her. She's all about feeding herself. Usually double fisting. Chicken cresents are a favorite. I'm just going to keep myself stocked since both kids LOVE them. She's still army crawling all over the place. She doesn't seem to mind all the dog hair she crawls through. And doesn't pay much attention to her friends in the nursery who are pulling themselves up to a stand and walking around things. She still has this nasty dirt eating habit which still drives Ted crazy.

Ted has had a good two weeks health wise. Makes me feel better. He's made friends with the "trouble maker" in his class. They are good buddies which, for the most part, is fine. But Ted is very much a follower - I've known that for awhile. However, I do not know how he got that from the two of us - must have gotten the recessive genes. So we've had some long talks about what is kind and not kind. And that you don't do things just b/c someone else is. And the consequences that he will have if he's not kind - we kind of figured those out together. We'll see. He's 3 - can't wait for jr. high . . .

Normal

So, things are getting back to "normal." We had the carpets cleaned this morning to finish off the job. I think my house is currently cleaner than . . . well, ever.
Here's some pictures for you . . .

Ted playing with some of his new friends when he went to preschool with my Mom in New Martinsville.

Sophie likes to dump out her box of toys and then play in/wrestle with the box.
Ted & Sophie on the little slide at McDonald's. We laughed SO HARD b/c the both loved it. My abs hurt from hefting Sophie up to sit between Ted's legs!!

This is the typical morning "do" for Sophie. Seriously, this is the way she wakes up in the morning.

Sophie loves her baby dolls. Mainly she eats their faces and wrestles around on the floor with them.

Bathroom Makeover - The Final Days

Well, it's finished . . . for the most part. The molding and the new door still have to be put up -the old door is still up. But the bathroom is complety usuable and SO WONDERFUL!! The last days involved putting up the tub surround and installing the sink and toilet, putting up towel racks and the cabinet. One day I cleaned the entire house. There was a small layer of plaster dust all over everything. It needed to be done anyways.

Ted went to New Martinsville with my mom Tuesday afternoon - Thursday morning. He got to visit Doh, Pap (not pictured in case you're wondering), Grandad & Aunt Lois.

The kids and I came home on Thursday. We had a little sleepover in the living room!

Pap & Ted taking a smoke break. That's Ted's drill that he "helped" with. The definition of help would be chase Millie in circles around the couch in the living room.

Here it is, the finished product!!!

And the inaugural bath on Saturday morning. I can actually take pictures of my children in the bath now!

Thanks Dad!

Home Makeover - Days 4 & 5

The bathroom renovation is coming along nicely. At the end of Day 4, the inspection was passed, all the drywall was up and all the taping done and drying.

Day 5: Doh & John Pap stop by to see Sophie on their way home from Alabama. Ted went to New Martinsville with Grandma Wendy for a couple days.

At the end of the day, the bathroom was sanded, primed, and painted. (I don't know why Ben is vacuuming out the tub - didn't ask, just took the picture).

Tomorrow, the tub surround goes up and sink and toilet are installed. The kids and I are moving home. Yay!!

Extreme Bathroom Makeover (Days 1-3)

So bathroom renovations have started. My dad let Ted put the first hole in the wall. Great . . . so when holes start appearing around the house, I know who to blame.

End of Day 1: Bathroom completely gutted

. . . and front yard full of trash.

Day 2: Floor down . . .

1st bathtub cracked so it has to be returned. 2nd bathtub the wrong one (and stolen!) Apparently they refund your credit card and you're supposed to pay for the new one on your way out. No one told them that. Good thing we had returned it b/c it would've been hot! 3rd tub - the right one.

Day 3: Tub installed

Sophie watching the action at Home Depot

The kids and I are staying at The Allevato's. They are so generous! We're hoping to have the house child liveable by Thursday!! But it's worth it for the new bathroom!!!!!

busy, busy, busy

Busy, busy week! Aunt Sara came to visit on Tuesday and Wednesday. We had a picnic with $5 pizza at the park. It was 80 degrees on Tuesday. Then snowed several inches Friday morning! We went to the Clay Center on Wednesday which is always a big hit.

In the meantime, Ted had a really bad "episode" at preschool on Tuesday. They called me to come and get him which they've never done before. He had another one Tuesday afternoon - he's never had 2 in one day. And it took him until Sunday to really start eating again.

We had a glucose tolerance test on Thursday. Ted was a CHAMP! He chugged the sugar stuff, peed in a cup 3 out of 4 times and only cried when they took blood the first time. The following 3 times they just pricked his fingers and then squeezed the blood out. He didn't complain in the least about not eating and even made a new friend in the waiting area. He was thrilled with all the band aids.

Friday we had an EEG to rule out mild seizures. They put about 30 sensors on his head with goopy stuff and tape.

Then they wrapped his head in guaze to hold them on.

Then we got to sit in a chair together and watch cartoons.

Again, he was a great sport. He cried when they put the sensors on and took them off. He said it was "a little bit scary." But he couldn't really see what they were doing to him. So he asked me to take a picture so he could see what he looked like.

We have an appointment with a pediatric endocrinologist at the end of April. I'm hoping to get on the cancellation list and get the ball rolling. I honestly don't think it's anything major. Just want to know and be done with it -manage whatever it is.

things that bring me joy . . .

* when ted kisses sophie good night and she laughs at him

* when ted gets up from his nap before sophie. that's our favorite snuggle time together

* the way sophie laughs when i tickle her chunky little thighs

* going in to get sophie in the morning - she is always so happy to see you

* the way sophie smiles and laughs when she sees ben

* when ted says, "mommy, i love you so much" for no reason at all

* the way ted thinks it's hilarious that he doesn't wear underwear under his pj's

* the way sophie wakes up in the morning and just talks to herself in her crib for awhile

* when ted opens the living room windows when you get home or leave giving details of life that the neighborhood probably doesn't want to know

spring has sprung

This weather is the BEST! It was close to 80 degrees today. Yesterday after preschool, we had a picnic at the park and Ted played some. Sophie is in "eat everything" stage. She doesn't differentiate between food and dirt. Ted is absolutely disgusted by her dirt eating habit.

Today we did family day at the park. We packed a picnic, took Millie and our walking stick wth us, and hit the park . . . along with half of Charleston! We went to a different one so that Sophie could have somewhere to play. She LOVED the swings. Ted climbed the climbing wall and all the ladders. He has conquered his fear of slides from last summer. When he got home he was ready for a bath and fresh clothes b/c his were too "sveaty!" It was a great day topped off by date night tonight.

9 Months

Sophie went for her 9 month check up today. I can't believe she's 9 months old and only 9 months old. Seems like she's been here forever. The other day Ted asked, "Mommy, do you remember when we didn't have Sophie?" It wasn't like he wished she wasn't here. Just remembering.

Her stats are:
Weight: 23 pounds 4 ounces (100th percentile)
Height: 27 3/4 inches (70th percentile) At least we're improving in this area.
Head: 18 inches (90th percentile)

Dr. Goliath said he wanted to "keep an eye on her weight" although he isn't too concerned b/c she really doesn't eat excessively. He also commented a lot on her personality. With all the poking and proding, she just smiled at him and let him do his thing. She does have such a sweet personality.

Sophie started getting snotty yesterday and is feeling a little yucky. She has sucked her thumb a lot today. I didn't realize that she really only sucks her thumb when she sleeps until she's been sucking it all the time. We had to go to Walmart to pick up some groceries. She took a little rest.

She wasn't sleeping, just resting. She NEVER does this. So she's had a nice afternoon nap.

This is Sophie's new favorite play place . . . Millie's water bowl. She has some sort of radar no matter where she is in the house. Still no crawling, just dragging herself around through all the dog hair! =)
