For the second year in a row, we put a nice bow on summer at Wild Ridge with the Bergs. This year it was a little later in September but it was still hot and felt like summer. So we'll take it! Stacy & Ben joined us Saturday and Tom & Cathy joined us Sunday. It was definitely an adventurous weekend!
We slept in yurts. Girls in one. Boys in the other.
We (well Scott & Ben) cooked over an open fire and even had pour overs.
And sometimes in the fire.
At the end of the pavillion is an open fire with a grate over it where they cooked. No running water. No electricity. It was great!
And the most beautiful views!
The kids tried to climb the climbing wall with little success. So they just found a ladder to climb on the top of it!
We shot BB guns.
And fought with sticks.
Susie and I were trying to be adventurous and fun so we took the kids on a hike, which turned into a scene from the Hunger Games. We followed some trails down towards the gorge and got into a yellow jackets nest. Mary, David and Ted went past it without stirring up the nest. Then Sophie stepped right in it. We tried to get past it only to get to a dead end and a drop off. We had to run back by a huge nest of swarming bees all the while be stung and crying and screaming. It was crazy and scary. I had to rip Sophie's shirt off and leave it in the woods because she was covered in bees. Bees were up Ted's shorts and stuck in Susie's hair. Between the 5 of us we had over 100 stings. It was awful and terrible and scary.
It took us awhile to get back up to camp. Ben and Scott (who had gone to get the ATV's while we were hiking) heard the screaming and crying from far away as we ran our way back up the hill. We iced everyone down and made them drink Benedryl. If any of them had been seriously allergic, there's no way Susie and I could've carried any one out of there. After we calmed down and knew that no one was going into anaphalaxis, we drove out of camp and down the road to have ice cream for lunch. Because why the heck not?
Back at camp we got in the jeep, on the 4-wheeler and RZR to run around the property a little bit.
We watched rafters go through Sweet's Falls on the Gauley River. So fun!
The kids were hot and itchy from the stings so we took them to a waterfall on the property to play around in the water.
Scott took Susie, Stacy & I over to the resort side of the property. None of us had been over there for a long time to see some of the work that had been done. Oh my gosh - this is going to be an incredible camp!
We had dinner in the fire.
And watched the sun set.
We sat around the fire and talked under the stars. They were unbelievable!
Sunday morning the kids jammed to some tunes.
And we had church around the fire.
Tom & Cathy joined us which was bonus.
Scott gave a few more rides.
And they got a little muddy!
As we were leaving, Ted's legs started to swell where he had gotten stung. Well over 24 hours later.
It kept getting larger for another 24 hours.
So we definitely need to watch this in the future.
This is one special place that God has given this mission and this state.
Our families have served along side each other for many, many years in various capacities. Ben and Scott did their first program assignment together in 2001, before either of us had kids. Ben and Scott dreamed about reaching every kid in the state of WV which led the Berg's to move to WV in 2009 and us to move to Morgantown in 2010. I've worked with Scott for 5.5 years. Susie and I have spent months of our lives together and spent many a day but the lake and/or the pool (with and without kids!). 16 years later our lives are intertwined by ministry and family and friendship. And we are deeply thankful!
